In the Market for a Home Defense Shotgun

Im in the market for a home defense shotgun (12 guage) and am wondering which one to get...Something with a short barrel like the Winchester Defender. Should I go pistol grip? What should I get? Thanks! Also, I will be buying it in Houston and would like to go to Academy or Carters Country to be able to get it. Hell Id go to Wal-mart if they had that sort of thing. So something I could buy locally in Houston.

Here's my remington 870 12 gauge with a 20 inch barrel and the surefire weapon light (something I consider necessary). Not pretty or tricked out but will do the job.

+1 to foolsgold

also consider the Mossberg 500 or Mossberg Maverick 88

Get something with the shortest barrel you can, itll help in close quarters, like a house.

I just picked up my Maverick today, couldnt be happier, execpt I need to swap the 28" barrel with an 18 1/2.

Re: In the Market for a Home Defense Shotgun

Yes to pistol grip as obasama will outlaw them. If you have your hand on a pistol grip it would be harder to disarm you as you came around a corner. Speaking of comming around corners, the shorter the barrel the better. Also get a fore grip and a light and a tactical sling, again so it is not taken away from you.:s15:

Also, if that is your dog in the avatar, then I doubt you have much to worry about. Just teach him to sleep in the living room / kitchen area.

Re: In the Market for a Home Defense Shotgun

First choice: Mossberg 500 series, preferably 590
Second choice: Remington 870

Must have 18 or 20 inch barrel.

I like the Rem 870 in 18" & is what I have.
I do not care for the pistol grip types so I keep it stock at the stock :)

I know some like it better grip but for shooting I like the brace of a stock + if someone does want to try & disarm in close quarters it makes a great weapon in itself, With hands in normal position you can use that stock very effectively across someones kisser

My local Academy had a Mossberg 12 ga. pump, I forget the model, for under $200. It wasn't a Persuader, but had very similar specs. If I wasn't already flush with 12 ga. home defense models, I'd have snapped that one up.

I'm in the same boat, trying to decide between Rem 870 and Moss 500s.

Someone on GIM posted this link earlier, I thought it was very informative and hope it will help you too

Re: In the Market for a Home Defense Shotgun

The foregrip on the mossberg 500 is pretty sweet, makes cycling the action easier, and aides in weapon retention

They also make a 20 inch barrel with jagged edges, like a \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ pattern (not sure of the technical name) looks like it could break a window much easier, or cause some serious pain in the event of not having any shells left....which is a good thing since I have a collapsing stock on mine, won't be using it like a club.

I don't think any of these features are specific to the mossberg however. Sure fits like a glove for me specifically however.
I also like the saftey - forward to fire.

I'll eventually get a remington 870 but maybe use it for hunting.

Get a Saiga 12 and a 20 rd drum. Even the banana mags allow you to mix 2 3/4 and 3inch.

Whatever you get, make sure you load up on plenty of 00 buck before "The Messiah" taxes it/bans it into oblivion.

I like the Mossbergs saftey position better. I like the remingtons feel better.

They will do the same thing.

Re: In the Market for a Home Defense Shotgun

I favor the Rem 870 over the Mossberg 500, strictly a personal fit and feel, either one will do the job. If you can find a Mossberg 590, that should be your shotgun! Pistol grip shotguns, regardless of the make, are a really bad idea, you can't accurately aim (and yes, you must aim a shotgun!).

I'm in the market as well. What about one of these . . . a 870 TAC Remington 8 shot 18"? Are folding stocks OK or a PITA?

I think that's called a breaching barrel.

Re: In the Market for a Home Defense Shotgun

breaching barrel: used on military shotguns which are often times used to blast open door locks, door knobs and door hinges.

Requires specialty ammo for this type of use.

Re: In the Market for a Home Defense Shotgun

Great responses and help guys. When I get to Houston I will go look at Academy and other gun stores as well. I will look at the Mossbergs and Remington 870s and the Winchester Defender with a pistol grip. So double 00 buck on the ammo for defense or what?? I can research that on my own if need be...

Maybe call ol' Mr. Horn in Pasadena and see what he recommends...JOKE

You don't even need 00Buck, #4 Buck maybe better, less chance of over penetration, with #4 you got 27 pellets; each one .24" in diameter, that's 24 caliber

Yeah you know I wonder about that too.
I have bought some single 0 buck
16 pellets versus 9 & it is cheaper too.
But in my head I like the thought of 9- 32 cal bullets flying at once too :)

I'm far, far from an expert...but I read on another forum that a good choice instead of a pistol grip is a "junior's" stock(as in for kids/teens). It's shorter than the regular stock, for better movement in small areas, but still allows you much better accuracy over a pistol grip

my .02 cents

Re: In the Market for a Home Defense Shotgun

If you get a pistol grip, make sure it has a stock, as others mention a straight pistol grip is far to unwieldly to accuartley aim. That could mean a lot if you are shooting down a hall way or there may be people in other rooms you are worried(like me with my daughter).

#4 buck is the minimum suggested load for stopping power. But it will penetrate an interior wall just as well as 00, dont think it wont. Check out: www.theboxotruth.com
for confirmation of that fact.

In a cylande bore(totaly open, no choke) 00 buck will give you about a 2- 2 1/2 inch spread at around 30 feet. So yes, you do HAVE TO AIM your shotgun, which is where having a stock comes in REALLY handy over a pistol grip.

I honestly prefer a full choke in my shotguns, in case i have to reach out and touch some one or something, or I need a bit more 'precision' up close.

full choke is great if you do not use slugs

Can anyone tell me how the Remington and the Mossberg compare in terms of cleaning and maintenance? Thanks.

Re: In the Market for a Home Defense Shotgun

I am biased, I trained on the 870 so that is what I have. I have an 870 super magnum, so I can shoot any size shells I can feed it. I'm working on a shorter 18" barrel if Remington would get off their arses and get production going(been waiting on it for nearly a month now). Remingtons and mossbergs are good because parts are everywhere. They are like the honda civic of cars, and people like doing dumb things to them just like the civics. Go feel out both and see what one you like better. The trigger safeties are different on both, about the only thing you will notice.
